Update on QGIS

I am about to enter my fourth month of using QGIS on a regular basis, so it’s time for an update! My experience with QGIS so far has been surprisingly fun. Last year I was so certain that I would not ever be versed in QGIS and that I would find a way to use Arc for the rest of my career. Working on this blog has changed my mind, and I was able to produce my first professional QGIS map for my job last month! (not pictured).

I have had to commit to learning QGIS for my new job, because the ArcGIS license that I have access to is not permitted for commercial use. I’ve been lucky that I still have access to Arc because of the blog, provided by the Water Institute at the University of Waterloo (shoutout!). Arc access has made the transition to QGIS a lot smoother, mixing familiarity with the new.

Now I have slowly started to learn how to do all the things in QGIS that I liked about Arc: importing point data from a spreadsheet and creating my own shapefiles, joining data from spreadsheets to existing shapefiles, and creating beautiful maps that have inset maps.

I will walk you guys through all those things in the next post!
